A small boat even just a few miles out of the search area might be easily missed.

My son, who is in the navy, has told me they can skip a signal, so I don't see why a VHF could not skip.

Big difference between Short Wave and VHF....was hoping a Ham could better explain a skip and triangulating on it.

HF we used to talk to the US all the time from Antarctica using different frequencies based on time of day.

i really hope it is a hoax but i actually have a feeling it is not.
first call came in at 4.20 pm - distress call.
next call 5.30 pm planning to abandon ship with details of how they were building a makeshift raft... sorry but that doesnt sound at all like it could possible be a hoax, but i surely hope it is.

Actually...out of all the maydays I heard...maybe in the thousands now...I don't ever recall people discussing how they were going to buid a raft....

Abandon ship, yes....plug the whole, yes.....going for the store bought life raft, yes...etc...etc...

But it was actually that comment about "building the raft and mentioning the componenets" that had me susecting hoax from the beginning.

I hope too that all is well and it was a hoax.
