The son of a friend of mine is a newly ordained marine electrician and I learned a lot from him when he came to the boat the other day. First of all, he backed up a lot of what Clectric has already told me concerning batteries, wiring etc. Thanks Clectric! Second we found out that the Balmar Digital Duo charge is not working as installed so I am taking steps to rectify this.
He had one of those clamp meter jobbies. He just put it around a cable and we could determine the real time amps drawn or charged in and out of the batteries. It's a real useful tool, so I bought one on sale at Canadian Tire.
