Building a Navigation system questions?

I guess programming time could be eliminated by using something like TimeZero or similar, or OpenCPN, as a starting point...

I think I could add every type of sensor to our TimeZero...

Check out OpenCPN and Signal K. Lots of open source development going on there, including most /all of what you ask about.

I read somewhere a set of glass airplane instruments costs 40- 50 boat dollars..... For that kind of money you could get anything you want for your boat...

Until daylight viewable MFD's come down in price it's not practicable on a flybridge.
Better to stay with the off the shelf stuff.

Plane stuff makes boat stuff look cheap and affordable.
