We live very close to the Skagit River south of Bellingham. I took this picture on Cape Horn Rd about 3 city blocks from our house. Great place for biking and walking. In many ways it's more beautiful here than the Alaska we left.

Trent & Mersey Canal, England. The only sounds were the birds in the hedgerows and the sheep on the hill.

DHMEISSNER, your pic in post #7 of the Norfolk Broads is great, my old stomping grounds and where I learned to love boats, thanks.

I love the picture of the Dismal Swamp! Wish we had one of those.

Rambler this is a tranquility picture thread. What's this about sunsets?

Marin I can hear the birds sing'in. VERY tranquil. Chris was overwhelmed w the wildlife here .... especially the birds. Much more than in Alaska except for the deer and bear.

Greetings,
Yup the Great Dismal swamp is an alternate route to the AICW. As I recall, only ONE turn between the locks just two straight cuts. Worth doing at least once and is a more sheltered passage between Iron Bridge, VA and Elizabeth City, NC. Best check those statements. It's been a while since I've been through there. Depending on the time of year and the water levels, there may be some floating and partially sunken stumps and sticks.
The BEST source for up to date information about that waterway is: http://www.dismalswamp.com/

We camped there while sea kayaking the coast. I woke up to a full moon that night, and got up to take a piss. The moons intense light was casting shadows in the forest as I walked along, and a pack of wolves were howling in the distance on the island opposite our camp. As I stopped to take my leak, a wolf let out a shockingly long and loud howl about 50' from where I was standing. Suddenly, I didn't have to piss anymore and walked smartly back to camp.

Yeah, thatís a great story.
I love a good sea story, or in this case, a good forest story. I like the part about the wolf being only 50 ft. from you. But really dude, you should have manned up and got a photo of the lycan to post here before you fled the scene like a Girl Scout (no sexism intended).

I really like the tranquil stuff (see OP), but Iím about to devolve into a placid pool of plasma. A good burst of adrenaline once in a while recharges the batteries (see S Cruz video.)

So, think 180* from tranquil. Letís see or hear what youíve got.
And please feel free to embellish (the wolf was only 10 ft. away). KJ

PS Please, no Bigfoot stories!
PPS One of these days Iíll figure out the rotting tree thing, Murray.

I was diving in the Bahamas when after a while I got this creepy feeling that I was being watched. After about ten minutes I turned around and saw this bad boy following me. KJ

Walking along the shore up the north end of Vancouver Island a couple of years ago. My wife shot this with a normal lens (58mm). Hard to say which one was more surprised.
