PG -- it wasn't my boat. It was an Ocean Alexander 44 that belonged to an "aquantence" that I was helping deliver to So Cal. His plan is to take her down to Mexico in a couple of weeks and live on her for about five years, maybe heading down to Costa Rica.

My boat is on the hard (almost a year now) in South Carolina. I'm hoping to splash her later this month or early Nov. KJ

Well, Capitan, that certainly clears up a lot. The last account I had of your boat was that it was around the Myrtle Beach area, and you were looking for info to move South. Where are you planning to wind up?

Sorry about the confusion.
Yes, my boat is at the Anchor Marina in N Myrtle Beach. I bought it last Nov., but I just retired this Sept.1.
I had looked for quite a while for a boat with the configuration that I wanted (needed), and when I finally found one, I “pulled the trigger” knowing that I would not get to use her for quite a while. Even though you hear folks say that there are tons of boats out there on the market, when you identify what you have to have (as opposed as to what you would like to have), the list of available vessels becomes quite limited.
I still check the listings on YW occasionally, just out of curiosity, to see what I might bought instead, and there really hasn’t been anything that I’ve seen that makes me sorry I bought when I did.

I will probably keep her at the Barefoot Marina (the manager is a friend of a friend) for a month or so and then head south. I had planned on stopping at Charleston, Savannah, St. Augustine, and then on to South Fla before heading across to the Bahamas for the rest of the winter. From what I’ve read here on the forum, it sounds like there are lots of other worthwhile places to check out along the way to S Fla.
I will take her up the AICW to NJ (possibly New England) for the 2013 summer, and then back down to the Caribbean where I will be participating in a reef research program (Project Aware).

This retirement thing could be quite a challenge (not). KJ

Fernandina Beach is a nice stop, right at the GA FL line. Town is right there. Good eats.

+1 on Fernandina. You can stay at the marina or in the mooring field.

Don't forget to stop by Ft. Pierce where Moonstruck is at the City Marina. Hopefully, we will be there. There is also a Sat. farmers market next to the marina that is great. One of the best inlets for jumping off to the Bahamas is right there.

You will have a great cruise.

A friend of mine retired a few years ago.
He claims he can't for the life of him figure out how he ever got anything done when he was working.

Great post, KJ! What a trip. Your pics of the ideal conditions you encountered made me want to give it a try someday. I was sitting here daydreaming about what it would be like to make the same trip someday!

Then PG's details put a quick end to that daydream. Thanks for bringing me to my senses, PG!!

PS. Congrats on your retirement!!

Thanks for the info on Fernandina Beach. It looks like a good place to stop.
I was thinking of provisioning in the Ft. Pierce area, perhaps even jumping off from there, although it seems a bit north for a winter crossing. KJ

What?? No no no. The picture made it look really bad but really the whole thing was a navigation error. Don't let that decades old accident stop you!!!
