Montserrat and Volcanoes

On way from Martinique to Guadalupe, we went by Montserrat to look at the volcano activity. It’s pretty spectacular to say the least. The first major eruption was in 1995 and with a few since then with another major in 2008. The anchorage is susceptible to any swell and is rolly except in calm conditions. For us the main attraction was the view from the water so we continued on.

Beautiful pictures.

Equal to or better than the Panoramio pictures on Google Earth.

Thanks for posting them

The first few pictures are from the SW on our way north so we are on the west side. The ruins are the old capital of Plymouth. The old airport is on the east side but from what of heard it looks pretty similar. Pretty much the SE half of the island got destroyed and is still within the exclusion zone. The population is about half of what is was in 1994 which was ~11,000 people.

I lived on neighboring Nevis from 2001-2003 while attending med school. On a very clear day you could see M from the island. In the last couple of months I was there M must have had an active moment and the wind was in the right direction because when I awoke that morning I was amazed thinking it had snowed. In reality it was a thin layer of ash on everything. I collected it in a jar and marked the date and put it away...I still have it in a box.
