Is that why RT is leaving?
My motto is no passing Norfolk till April Fools Day.....
Maybe with this winter even the eager beavers won't start needing tow service till later...but the boss was promised April 15th to start my watch.

We're all iced in up here, as far as I know. Certainly our river and local little Bay, marina, etc. Lots of news reports about the icebreakers in the main Bay, I think one captain said he thought ice even down south of here as up to 18" thick...
RT much be south of where we are, if all he's got to worry about is gale warnings.

Snowing and 29 here in New Bern NC today. Warming up into the 60's next week, which this time of year means rain and lots of it.

Greetings,
Broke ice to leave the harbor this morning. Snow on the open water and a hard grounding (BIL was following the magenta line-NEW rule for BIL "Forget about the magenta line, focus on the depth) . Freezing rain now.

That new rule will come in handy for the rest of your ICW travels, otherwise put Sea Tow on speed dial.
For sure keep us posted with pictures. I've never seen the Chessie frozen over.

Oh, yeah, if you're near the magenta line, you're already WAY south of us.

Greetings,
End of day two. Waited 3 hours for bridge. According to bridge tender "She froze up y'all." Noticed a transmission whine-came on suddenly and I shut it down immediately. Checked fluid-WAY over mark. Changed tranny cooler whilst underway and running on 1. Drained and put in new fluid. No whine, no milkyness...May have dodged the bullet. Wildlife score: 1 bald eagle, 4 deer, 1 bearded bridge attendant. 4" snow forecast for tonight and 22F. Oh, and throw in a 2" batch of freezing rain as well. NO groundings today.
Mr. F. New thread? Since I was asking about the hazards, the travelogue DOES fit in with the original intent. Not all that glamorous really other than the Admiral just showed me what's coming tonight and tomorrow. Holy crap, this next system covers 2/3 of the south!
I heard through the grapevine that the ICW is icebound and closed Albermarle Sound to Norflik, VA. BOTH routes! Dismal Swamp Canal AND main Coinjock branch.

RT- I guess this thread will do. Don't you feel you are being a bit harsh towards the bridge attendant?? After all. They are just humans like us......

Maybe a little thread drift but the local news talking heads have reported the Fort Pierce Inlet is closed due to a barge sinking. There was no indication when it may reopen.

I just happen to have found a picture someone snapped when RT was not expecting it.
Watch out for them pesky paparazzi Mr Firefly and enjoy the boat ride.

Back in my industry days we had a maintenance term.. "RTF".. Run To Failure. I have to keep knocking that out of my head when I see a post from Mr. Firefly.
And beware the paparazzi.
Good travels!!

Location would certainly help! Weather here in eastern NC has been and is again today, miserable.
Cruisersnet (Salty Southeast) sent out an alert yesterday on the Fort Pierce inlet issue right after it happened.

Capt. Tris Colket who was quoted in the Cruisersnet report is the captain that looks after Moonstruck in my absence. A great guy with the busiest charter boat in the area. This is costing him money.

Sure looks like one of those derelict $1 barges. It was mentioned as a live aboard and clearly was not a commercially viable barge. In the keys especially, but in other areas too, often vessels of various sorts are left at marinas on just ditched somewhere. When left at the marina then it's their obligation to dispose of it safely. However, if they can sell it or even give it away then that shifts to the buyer. They was one that didn't make it a mile before it sunk. Clean up costs for it were estimated at $500,000. Obviously the boat in this situation was not able to operate under it's own power, whether a temporary or permanent situation. Perhaps it was an ebay or Craigslist special.
Regardless the loss of life is sad and the cost of dealing with the vessel is quite high. Unfortunately Florida has more than it's share of vessels like this one and is still searching for a solution.
