Willy gets TLC and return to Thorne Bay

Here are the pics:

!. Just hauled in Craig. The boat's been in the water about 4 yrs except twice on the grid in Thorne Bay. The bottom coat was Interlux Micron-Extra. I was not pleased that it was not really "ablative" as in sluffing away and not needing scraping. No such luck. Much scraping to do.
2. This shows how well the Interlux worked as far as antifouling goes.
3. Here's the crew blocking her up.
4. Scraping from the bow.
5. Bow done.
6, A broadside w her new Pettit "Sea Mate" $85 bottom paint. It was stacked up at the store so I assumed this is what everyone uses here. Most all only recoat annually on a grid. Just what I intend to do.
7. *Stern done showing new "Nibral" propeller.
8. *At city float just after launch.
9. *Starting out for home from Craig.
10. In Tonowak Pass a wooden warrior guards the chief's grave.
11. In the narrows at Dry Pass.
12. Calder Mountain from west Sumner Strait.
13. * Point Baker.
14. *In Clarence Strait near home.

Did two solo 13hr days to beat a gale home.

Eric

Troy,Yes. I hired a man to help me w the scraping one day. I got one quarter of the bottom the first day and knew I'd have trouble finishing the job so I hired help. Chris was doing great work on the brightwork and other things so I didn't want her to stop and I didn't want her under the boat covered w red copper stuff anyway so she got a lot done elsewhere. I serviced the heat exchanger, sea water strainer ect ect. I ground out about 40-50 blister like imperfections and painted w thickened epoxy. Then the bottom needed sanding.*We worked all day for about a week and was very glad when launch day came.

Straycat,That's cool * * ..someone's got a boat about my size * * .. but your Prairie LOOKs like a 40 footer. Our Willy looks more like a cute LITTLE boat. Actually I would like to have a Nordic 32 but the Willard is perfect for Alaska. Yes * *..a lot of work. The summer days aren't so long anymore. It's full dark at 2030 now. Willy turn's heads (even though she's old and it shows). In the 1st photo Chris looks proud don't you think?

That is funny because we took a trip to Port Aransas in our Prairie when we had it and pulled into the dock. *We were met by the harbormaster with paperwork in hand. *The fees were based on boats 30 and under....31-40.....etc. *ANd of course ours was a Prairie 29!!!! *So he asked how big it was and I told him, "29 feet."!!! *He said, "Nope...nuh uh....no way...sorry dude you get charged for the 31-40 rate!"... *I am like, "I can show you the papers, the survey, we can take out a tape measure???!!!".... *He would have none of it. *The difference was $20 versus $25 so I didn't fight him on it...and of course the ego was stroked a bit in the process. *Those Prairies are big little boats!!!!

Eric

How "normally" is the trip* regarding weather and sea state? That route is one we'd like to do next year along if we do QCs on east side.

And what a nice white hull!!

Tom

RE: Willy gets TLC and return to Thorne Bay

Tom,Thanks for the acid. Very effective.
"QCs" = Queen Charlotte Is ??
You know the SE drill. Misty, cloudy or mix, sunny on occasion, rainy ect ect. Wind is the deal-breaker variable. Was 15 to almost 20 in Shakan Bay both ways for me. Wind was 20 in the Bay of Esquibel. The somewhat predictable part in Shakan Bay is that fog is very common in the fall. So common on the outside coast one should plan to not travel there unless necessary. Fog in Puget Sound is associated w calm water. Here it often comes w wind. Do you plan a dead ended rout or do you plan to do Cape Chacon?

Last night had W35 and fog in parts of Strait of Juan de Fuca, and it will usually push into parts of Puget Sound.* This wind/fog event is common here in the mid-to-late summer when onshore flow reacts to interior daytime heating, although last night it was associated with a cold front.***
