1. Myers Chuck straight across Clarence Strait from Thorne Bay.

2. Small cove in Thorne bay. Behind me was property and a cabin I wanted to buy. Never came together on the price.

3. Small unnamed island at the west end of Karheen Passage near Garden Island.

Eric, the Admiral and I just got back from a 2 week cruise and train trip with Royal Caribbean in Alaska. I would love to cruise in my own boat or a charter. Alaska gives adventure a whole new meaning. I have thousands of pictures of the coast and a few of the marinas.

One of Ketchikan's several marinas/harbors with two of several cruise ships in view:

In Ketchikan, float planes are as thick as mosquitoes.

Are you getting homesick for Alaska, Eric?

Can you feel it in your bones that the salmon are starting to arrive? Can you see in your minds eye seagulls flying inland to the spawning beds? Can you sense the days getting shorter and the nights getting longer and darker? Are you inexorably being pulled north for the spectacular fall and winter by some mysterious reverse migratory force?

Seems Eric is still in love with his X, and how could he not be. Definitely a special place on this earth. Eric's brother knew a thing or two about Alaska as well.

Dave is that bottom pic of Skagway?

freshalaska what you mean brother?

1. In a small cove on Thorne Bay where we were looking at a cabin and several acres. The boat is my 18' Clipper McKenzie square stern freight canoe. Almost always run it w OB. With a 6 0r 8 hp OB can go twice as fast as Willy. Wind in the face canoeing. And a 1500lb capacity. Note the spray rail .. that I mounted too high.

2. On the beach of an unnamed Island w Garden Is across the water. In Sea Otter Sound. The extremely high concentration of clam shells indicate that this is an old village site but the high concentration of Sea Otters here (in Sea Otter Sound) means the Sea Otters have been here for thousands of years so it's probably a mix of both. Marin points out that the propper name for these old village sites is Midden.

3. At Klawock. The first cannery in Alaska. Was built not this century or the last but the century before that.

1. An islet in the NE corner of Shakan Bay on NW Prince of Wales Is. In some places there are white sand beaches along the north coast. There are some on the east side of Camano Sound no of Prince Rupert. Probably elsewhere too.

2. My favorite trailer boat launch .. Staney Creek.

3. Landing on what we call picnic island W Karheen Passage and east Sea Otter Sound. This could be one of those Middens but I think the clam shells here are mostly or all from Sea Otter activity. In this area one can see 10 or 15 of them together at times.Click image for larger version

Alaska looks beautiful, and I would love to go there on a boat some day, but y'all have some twisted ideas as to what constitutes a beach.

Dougcole,
Alaska has some beautiful and interesting beaches. Some are straight up and down w no sand. Others are piled high w logs. Many are rocks and seaweed .. mostly kelp. A few even have sand.
I thought many of you that are accustomed to more typical beaches would like a tour of this interesting place.

Here's one a friend took.

Eric, I like the pics a lot. Great scenery, mostly unspoilt by man. Even if not what I normally call a beach, complete with sun, sand, surf, and melanoma seekers.
Keep `em coming.

For the record....Sarah Palin never said that...It was Tina Fey doing a spoof on Palin & the press ran with it, attributing the claim to Palin. Even Snopes has it wrong! (Which is no surprise.)
