Anyone Done Galveston to Mobile (outside)

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
First of all, I wouldn't do it with only two helmsmen. Especially inexperienced offshore sailors.
Second, although it's still early to forecast next weeks winds the GFS model is predicting 2-4 seas during that period, nice on Monday, winds pick up to 20 knots on Tuesday then die down to 12-15 knots Wednesday then picking up a little on Thursday. So we are not in that time period yet where you can get 3-4 days of settled weather.

Doing the trip on the outside but hugging the coast even looks suspect now. Winds could stay low the first couple of days but pick up considerably on days 3-4. Like you said, not long enough of a window available yet.

It's dawning on me that if I want to do this trip this time of the year I better just go the ICW the entire way. Sigh.

Just finished a Kemah to Mississippi passage on the ICW yesterday. Boring, but bought diesel for $1.87 a gallon at Shell Morgan Landing!

Yeah, it's boring. Looks like I'm going that way again however. Later this month it looks like.

Any problem spots? How were the locks going through NOLA?

No problems really. Lots of barge traffic, of course.

Our route was Kemah to Sabine Pass. We tied up at Sabine Port Authority ($66) .

Then to Shell Morgan Landing ($20).

Then to Berwick city docks, right by Morgan City (free with a great restaurant a couple of blocks away, Bayou Langiappe.)

Then we spent the final night tied to an abandoned barge by the waste company lot right outside of the Harvey locks. Then we locked through them around seven am, went down the Mississippi and pulled into the industrial canal.

We had to wait for the rush hour curfew on the St. Claude Bridge before locking through at 9:00 am with a tugboat. Then we continued on down the ICW (the Seabrook RR bridge is still broken, you know, so you can't exit to Lake Ponchatrain).

Made it home to Bay Saint Louis by 4:30 pm.

How fast were you running? I cruise at 7 knots.

7 the first day, 10 the second day, 7 the third and fourth day ( slowed back down to save fuel), and 8.5 the fifth day. We got in pretty late to Shell Morgan and to the abandoned tug we tied up to.

We were lucky with a full moon that lit things up pretty good (because our radar went tits up on us). We also just followed behind barges after dark on the runs we got in late on (midnite at Shell Morgan and ten pm at Harvey locks) and just closed up tight behind them when they were passing other barges in tight corners and stuff. We would just call the oncoming tow and tell them we were behind the tug and would just do what he did. It worked pretty well. No hair raising experiences.

We were going to tie up at Boomtown the last night but it looked really rough. The abandoned barge turned out to be the easist tie up we had on the trip. Right next to the BFI lot on the right (easy to spot because of the blue dumpsters), and perpendicular to the canal, just before the Harvey locks.

We got into Berwick early (and left late) and ate at a really nice restaurant that the police told us about when we called into the after 4 pm number.

I was wondering how you made those longer runs. I've never run at night on the ICW. That always seemed too risky to me, but I guess following a barge would be the best way if I had to do that.

I tied up at Boomtown last time. The spot we tied up to looked pretty bad with all the jagged concrete and rebar sticking out, but I just put out all my fenders we didn't have any issues. It was nice being able to use the casino restaurants. Good to know about the dumpster spot however.

We just finished Seabrook, TX to Gulfport, MS offshore. We left Seabrook at 7:30am Friday morning, arrived Gulfport 4:15pm Sunday. It was a great trip.

Did you anchor every night?

CDude, this is the week to go if your going. Big high pressure system settling over the northern gulf will give nice weather at least through Friday and maybe into Saturday.

Drake: beautiful vid! What kind of drone do you have?

Bill, be sure to holla when you get to the Port Arthur/Cameron/Lake Charles area and I will try meet up with you'all.

Will do! Hopefully it won't be a distress call like last time. [emoji41]

Thanks, but since I don't have any crew I'm just gonna go the ICW route again. I think one of my sons will join me to help through the locks in NOLA. I tried to arrange going outside during their spring break but the weather just wouldn't cooperate.

Great video-Getting drone fever-I really don't need another toy:blush:, Video makes me want to crank it up and go.

Every time I see video from one, I think "that would be cool" and then I picture the look on my wife's face when she catches me with one.

DJI Phantom 3. My son is much better flying it that I am. Plus, he edits video professionally. He did that from the raw footage in less than an hour.

How did you get the video on this site. When I tried my videos didn't show up for selection. I didn't think I could. I loved the dolphins I see them in my wake all the time. I wonder how many times I missed them off the bow.

He posted the video on vimeo, then I posted a link to the vimeo site.

Nice video. What would estimate the cruising speed and RPM to be?

For those questioning the niceties of a fly bridge, DeFevers are well designed for one as shown in the video.

We usually cruise at 1400 rpm, which gives us about 8 knots. We have JD 6068's.

The great flybridge was one of the reasons we chose our Defever. We had a 44, which is about the same flybridge configuration, and found that we used it almost all the time. It's a great place to relax and have dinner. We drive almost exclusively from there.
