Ford Lehman raw water pump
Question for the Lehman owners. My current water pump that I just took off my Lehman is the Jabsco 5850-0001 pump. a few questions for you.
1. Does anyone know the model number for the Johnson alternative and Is it a straight swap?
2. Is the Jabsco 5850-0001 the original pumps that the early 80's vintage Lehmans came with?
3. Anything I should know before deciding on a new one? I have an 1983 80hp Lehman.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Raw water pump Lehman 120HP
I have just replaced the raw water pump on my PT engine with a johnson 10-24140 this replaced the Jabsco 10950-2401. Purchased from Fred Warner, Washington State USA Via Ebay.. Good deal and cheaper than i could get in Australia that includes the postage. The Johnson was a direct replacement. I'am on the Gold Coast at present soon to be in Adelaide with my Blue Seas 36ft Aft cabin cruiser. Probably by road transport at this stage

Adelaide, in the past, Marin posted about the defects and ultimately non fixable nature of the original. Can`t recall the detail but as usual it was convincing. I remember my diesel guy muttering about fixing one of mine during post purchase servicing.
Grammarr, I bought parts from Fred Warner too, he knows about Lehman, postage, even Australian GST.

It appears from the brochure (Thanks captrigney) for American Diesel that the Jabsco is aftermarket and not original??
I am going to take the pump down to Harbor Marine in Everett to see about refurbishing it. The PO busted a brass screw off one of the impeller cover holes and the cam screw is frozen. The Cam itself protrudes ever so slightly out of the casing, causing water to drip from the bottom. The PO purchased a "speed Seal cover" which only uses 4 of the screw holes and a rubber seal (no paper gasket). To make up for the cam sticking slightly out of the housing, he used only part of the normal paper gasket to level it out. Anyway, I want it right, not MacGyvered. So, I will either buy a new one or pay for someone to make this right.

Thanks Tom. That's good info and got me thinking. For anyone who has the Jabsco 5850-0001 pump, does this black cam look like yours? Or is yours bronze?

I don't know if this will help but here is a link to the parts list and repair instructions for the 5850-0001.

Is the cam touching the wear plate at the back? It should and the other end of the cam should be flush with the front surface of the pump. If the cam is protruding from the front and touching the wear plate, maybe the wear plate isn't seated correctly.

Thanks Hopcar. I just got off the phone with American Diesel. The Jabsco 5850 is the original pump. This pump is obsolete as you can't get the Drive gear anymore and the bearings will wear and fail. A Johnson replacement 'one piece' pump with gear is $450.00. Much better than throwing another $500 at the Jabsco set up. I believe that the PO, once he broke the screw off, decided to sand it down. This created wear so that a cover wouldn't seat right on the pump due to the cam extending slightly out of the housing.
