I've plugged cracks in metal hull mock-ups with shingles on the damage control simulator. I don't think they'd work as well in fiberglass, you'd just make the crack bigger. I have a bunch on board left over from a bundle I bought for a specific project, and I've already found 100 other uses for them.

I have a variety of plugs, wedges and nerf balls on hand. I hope to never use them, but am that kind of guy. Spent many hours in the wet trainer (go to 4:10 in) ,and I guess the lessons stuck. I only had to deal with one major high pressure seawater leak on our boat, and I used a pencil and some duct tape. The wooden plugs in the DC kit were all too big.
