Stripping varnished wood with awlgrip on top of it

Weird question, I'm looking for someone who has experience with awlgrip over varnish.

The PO let the varnish job go to crap, and all of the teak needs to be stripped before it's refinished. At the same time, I've been looking at getting the topsides painted and realized it might be possible to paint without masking any of the teak, then strip it after. This could save a pretty big amount of labor in masking. The question is, will I be able to strip the varnish off if it's covered in awlgrip? The varnish is practically ready to jump off the wood (it already has in places). Does anybody see a problem with this approach? Think it would work?

Mr. W. IF you're intending on re-varnishing the teak I would recommend you protect it from any paint contamination. If any errant paint lands on bare teak OR seeps under the loose varnish it will be nigh on next to impossible to remove after the fact. My $.02.
