Re-caulking teak decking?

The black caulking between the strips of teak on the cockpit sole (exterior) is beginning to show signs of deterioration. Looks like polyether sealant. Any tricks to removing the old? And what about resealing without smearing that black gunk into the grain of the (unfinished) teak strips? Should I mask off every one of those skinny teak strips? Thanks.
