Paint or oil

A Commercial fisherman friend of mine noticed I was painting my engine. He told me all he does is oil the outside. He said he uses what ever is at hand in the way of oil. He just wipes it down regularly with an oily rag.

He works on it all the time himself and says he never has an issue with rust.

Which is the reason I was painting it. To keep down on the rust.

He showed me his motor. Not what I expected. Pretty clean just oiley

Opinions?

RE: Paint or oil

Is his engine down to cast iron or AL and then he oils it or does he just oil over the paint that is already there?

So how would one trace down a small oil leak?* The oil tends to*collects all of the airborne dirt.

Paint or oil

He just wipes it all over with a rag but he seems to do it all the time.

I asked the same question.

I think I will keep mine painted.

A private boat that gets perhaps 100-200 hours a year will sit a lot.

NOT be worked on very much to be oiled.

I would do white paint , the easier to see any leaks.
