Greetings all,
One of this years projects was to address the cap and railing on the FB. The decision to replace rather than refinish was made based on the condition, ie: #of abandoned penetrations, uneven weathering and silicone contamination. The boat came w/o a windscreen and the unused dado channel was an excellent water/dirt collector.
One of my primary goals with all of the boats woodwork is to (where possible) attach it in such away that allows removal and re-coating back in the shop. With that in mind, the cap is screwed from underneath and tongue of the side rails are captured with a carriage bolt. Home made 316 washers distribute the load on the surface and butyl tape seals the penetrations.
The curved section under the short stanchion provided the opportunity to attempt steam bending. I extended the bull nose past the edge of the FG to hide sanding scratches from a PO.
The wood is qtr sawn Afrormosia. I'll continue to use spar varnish over epoxy until I find a better method....or cry Uncle!
