Leather Flexsteel RV couch

We have a Leather Flexsteel couch in the saloon. It's in good condition overall, but the 33 see at cushions (attached to the sofa) have roughened and stained and are in need of some work. I did some local research and found a recommendation for fellow who does restorations. So we take it all the way across town and the guy comes back with an estimate of $3850, before taxes. The couch came back to the boat!

Does anyone have any experience with a do it yourself repair?

Do you have pictures of the damage you are trying to fix? Microfiber cloth dampened with vinegar works best for us for general cleaning and a non oil leather conditioner with bees wax in it.

For the quoted price I'd contact flexsteel direct and inquire if they can provide a factory new upholstery kit.

Wow! I bet he knew it came from a "yacht" and priced it accordingly. (only kidding)

Craig's ideas a good one and I would also call a few major RV dealers. They probably work on and reupholster couches or can refer you to some one who does.

"33 see"? Were you trying to say "seam"? Do you have a picture?

Not sure what your damage looks like but just saw these repair links recently.

Haven't actually done this but it looks like it will work fairly easily.

Ok. So what is the damage other than soiling (which is generally easy to clean)? Roughened can be sanded smooth. Have seams opened up?

Seams haven't opened up. Some "cat" scratches. It's lost it's original finish and parts have become "suede like". Do you actually sand the leather?

We had some Flexsteel leather furniture in our home. We bought it from Sears and bought the extended warrenty. The leather started cracking within 6 months. Sears replaced it under the warrenty and the new furniture did the same thing. The second time I got a full refund from Sears and went with Lazyboy. Don't know if the RV furniture is the same, but we never went with Flexsteel again.

Prices like those were the reason I started doing upholstery. An RV Flexsteel sofa was my first job. It's the easiest of couches to redo. No staples, fabric was all held by clips ( at least the style I had). Microfiber is a nice alternative to leather and easier to sew ( for seat cushions, if necessary). You might try to hunt around for a hobbyist (like me).
Ask at a local upholstery fabric shop or on Craigslist, ask to see some of their work.
I have a blog of before and afters, so serious home upholsterers would have examples for you to gauge their work.
Good luck in your search or repairs.

The couch came with the boat, and I believe it predates the most recent PO. We are making another slip cover. It's a really nice couch except the seat cushions show considerable wear. Evidently the leather can be restored. I just need to understand what is involved.

We got rid of 2 leather Lazyboy reclining chairs. The leather just didn't hold up on the boat. The finish didn't last even though we followed all the leather care instructions. We are full time on the boat but if you live in a house and have these chairs...?

I have no idea but maybe leather just isn't the first choice for a smaller recreational boats atmosphere.
