how to tell if gelcoat or paint?

I want to refinish my decks and can't tell if I'm looking at gelcoat or paint. How do you confirm?

Look for cracks in gelcoat at high load areas.

Most paint stretches well so you wont find cracks at hi load points .

Does it really matter?

If it is gelcoat and you are doing repair you will have to sand it off to effect repair.

*If it is paint same thing you need to at least rough it up.

So I would just sand it off to where you know it is gelcoat and start from there.

It's not a matter of repair. I don't like the color (Carolina Blue) and it's faded. The nonskid areas of the deck are molded and sanding them really isn't an option. The question is about what I put back over them. If it's gel-coat I might have gel-coat reapplied if it's paint I will for sure repaint.

"The question is about what I put back over them."

Falling on board (or worse) can cost days in intensive care.

TREADMASTER is the worldwide pro choice if you really want no skid.
