Mine has a red plastic plug with a small hole in it. Unless it's exposed directly to the elements (and it's not being under the flybridge) I can't imagine any contamination.

I went through the manual and it refers to a vent plug, needs to be removed to vent the system, nowhere does it refer to a venting plug. But if you prefer to vent your system and allow dust and moisture into it, drill away.
