I know many of the folks involved with Young Life and who take groups of kids up to Malibu. They are very safety conscious. If it was one of their campers, they will be crushed. Hard to ride herd on 14-18 year olds.

Sorry, Dave, I'm hearing it was a teen from the lodge.

A dive team recovered the young student.
Not an easy job.

Hopefully they will be able to shed some light on what happened but certainly tragic for all.

The speculators and finger pointers are already in second gear on their way to overdrive.

Reality is, in 60 years of operation as a youth "camp" it has not before generated negative press.

I have only heard positive comments regarding Malibu Camp, I have a friend that has been part of the opening staff for years.

There will no doubt be lots of armchair speculation in this tragic event... but many times the judgement of the victim has a large part in the event. Like the couple that kept backing up for a selfie and fell off the rim of the Grand Canyon.

Do doubt it will cast a pall on the camp this season.. I feel for the parents.

I hope the parents are wise enough to get counseling for the kids too. I am very close to a 58 year old lady traumatized 48 years ago by the death of a friend at a church camp in a canoe incident. To this day, she's scared to get on a boat and for a long time she was scared for us every time we went out on a boat.

You are correct on all counts and there is a chapter on the "recovery" that will not be told, beyond the locals, simply because it is not sexy enough for the 6 o'clock news.

A friend who was my best man will be camp director there next month. It will be a challenging time.

Not sure how it would have happened. I was there twice as a kid and never recall anyone going down to the entrance of the inlet. I asked my kids and they were surprised that anyone would be down there to fall in.

We're not parents but we're heavily involved with an orphanage. It's run incredibly well, but kids still get hurt. We're lucky no deaths, but one day it might happen. The first year we were involved, we bought them new playground equipment. As we looked at it, we thought of all the possible injuries. We just knew it was safer than the old equipment. The first time we heard of a kid getting injured on any of it, we felt terrible. Ultimately, you can't protect them like you wish. I'm sure parents deal with that daily, but you have to let them have lives and enjoy living too. A kid tears his ACL playing basketball, you feel guilty and don't know why. They go to school where they encounter everything. They play sports. They go to summer camps. I feel real pain for the parents and for everyone involved, even if it's found someone made a mistake. Your friend has our virtual support as he directs the camp next month. That will take courage, but it's needed for everyone. It doesn't mean this will have been forgotten, just that people are moving on the best they can. I also think sharing feelings is important and don't agree with the philosophy I've seen in schools of not talking about terrible events. The kids are talking about them and want the adults to do so with them. They need to know we shed tears.

I think back to 9/11 and forget all politics for a moment, but we saw a very emotional George Bush. It helped to know he was feeling the same things we were and wasn't able to talk calmly and unemotionally about it.

Power and support to your friend. I think if I was in his position. Yes, I could do it, but it sure would be heart wrenching each day as we resumed.

Please share anything you find factually in that chapter.
