It's a huge amount of sail area for a 13000 pound boat so they are very sensitive to pitchpoling when running downwind. I'm no expert but I'd guess they didn't have enough tension on the backstay to flex the mast and give extra lift on the bow.

I just compared it to my boat. Same weight and 21 times as much sail area.

These things are riding on a foil that's only a foot or so wide and 4 or 5 feet long....for a 50 foot boat that's quite a balancing act.

Luckily for NZ the racing was called off today due to high winds so they have another day to work on their fixes.

Still should be interesting if they can bring her back.
