All of a sudden I have Korean language on my screen and there is NO ENGLISH as shown in the below example. How do I convert back if in fact I have done some thing in error.

Please get posting folks, we have deleted lot of posts, but they were extremely malicious in the they only posted 1 post per thread, so there are too many to entirely delete. However, the more proper posts put up, the quicker the rest of the now banned poster's posts will disappear down out of sight in the right latest post column.

Sorry about that, but if some one is malicious enough they can do a lot of damage in a short time. Makes you wonder how their minds work, doesn't it. To get fun out of doing that, their minds must be pretty small.
PS. I just hope they can read English as well as Korean.

As a member, there is no much you can do but to immediately change your password. Passwords are notorious for being the weakest link between a network and a successful attack then I would urge members to reset immediately their passwords.

- One password = one account : In the event your TF password has been cracked or found, the last thing you want is for the hacker to have access to your other accounts, so be sure to use a unique password for every account you have.

Hate to disagree, but there's a LOT more you can do! It's even more important to have a robust antiviirus/malware protection program installed and keep it updated!!! No protection software can block something it doesn't know exists on your computer. My office computer stays on 24/7, so it updates automatically overnight every day...if yours doesn't, run update every time you turn it on.

I've used Bitdefender Total Security for years..the top rated package...can block everything including ransomware. It's not free--free versions of anything only provide the level of protection you're paying for.-but it's very reasonably priced. Check it out at Bitdefender.com

The Site was not hacked - just spammed. Spam is a common problem on forums and while we have measures in place to slow it down, we still see it from time to time. These are bots that register and then put up post after post of crap. No accounts have been breached.

OMC, I agree that changing passwords is prudent in this situation, and that simply viewing posts on a forum such as TF doesn't put you are risk unless you click through on any links.

However, I think Peggy's advice was more general in nature rather than specific to the type of annoying attack that TF suffered. As such, the advice is excellent. Using some type of good real-time security software on our computers is a good idea in general and was offered as such as opposed to being criticism.

You misread it, Ollie ...if you read my post again you'll see that I sad, "Never click on a link in a post or email unless you're absolutely certain of its origin." We can be reasonably certain of the origin of any links in posts to TF..but TF isn't the only site people here ever visit...and they also receive a lot of emails.

1. 4 characters out of the URL, always in the same position. E.G. the last 4 character of the URL, or the first 2 + the last 2, etc. E.G. trawlerforum.com might be tr*****um*.

2. Next, a constant value of 3 characters. These could be the first 3 letters of your spouse's name. E.G. Sarah and the password for trawlerforum.com becomes trsar**um*.

3. Next, a variable component of 2 characters. These could be the first letter of the current month + the last digit of the current year, so August of 2017 becomes a7. Trawlerforum password is now trsara7um*

4. A special character, like "?", "!" etc.

I reset the variable component annually and since I follow the same formula for all sites, it is always calculable even though the ending password is very strong and unique per site. If this sounds complicated, try restoring a stolen identity.

One final tip that few seem to be aware of....you can freeze your credit report online for each of the 3 main services. I think it is free to do everywhere, but some states may allow a small fee. The net effect of freezing your credit report is that no one can open an account, rent an apartment or do anything dependent on a credit report return until you go online and unfreeze them. So, unless you are applying for credit, keep your reports frozen on all three reporting services and you'll be pretty bullet proof from a stolen credit standpoint.

You'll have to help me out on why it isn't valid, if that is what you're saying. Validity is measured, with passwords at any rate, by algorithms that test the strength of the password. Your password was not at risk from the spam event. it was spam (a LOT of spam) and that's all. That said, if you are uncomfortable abotu this you can change your password via your user cp. Link on the upper navbar...

A few years ago we added a plugin to prevent folks from using their username as their password and forced resets. You would be surprised at how common this was....

A good password has: Lower and uppercase letters, some numbers and a special character or two. the best ones are random combos.

If you have trouble remembering passwords you might try a phrase that has some meaning to you and swap out a letter for a visually similar special character. Example: nobildgewaters could be n0b!lgewater$

Forgot to mention using capital letters in the same place each time. So far, I've found only one site that doesn't like special characters, but the days of having easily cracked passwords or forgetting what they are is not a problem now.

One can also use a service like 1password, but I haven't found them to be completely stable, and managing it as described above, I can't really forget a password, and they always test as extremely strong.
