Looking at changing cushions - budget?
Hello fellow TFers!
I a looking at changing the cushions in my boat, in the saloon sitting area as well as in the V forward dining area.
This is 10 cushions, 4 squares for the saloon part (sittings are two bench face to face of about 4 or 5 feet long) and 6 for the V benches.
Does anybody has any of the cost? I know the answer will depends on the fabric cost and the size of the cushions but I just try to get an aproximate idea of the cost.
Thank you!
L.

With all of our cushions "loose", I took them to an upholsterer I`d used previously, not a boat trimmer, who quoted and recovered the existing foam cushions. It was a while back, can`t recall the cost, but I recall it was reasonable, and really lifted the interior of the boat.

My wife bring the current cushion to an upholsterer today. They are old, ugly and not thick enough for my delicate butt so I want them to be rebuilt but at least with the old one he has the pattern.
I will have a estimated price tomorrow but he foresee this around 1500$CA so around 1100$US.
I have really no idea if this is a good price or not.

Lou, impossible this far away to comment authoritatively on cost, but 6 years ago we paid around $1200 AUD for what I call "fake suede". Upholsterers can achieve different resilience with different foam cushions, or combinations of foam layers.

Greetings,
Mr. L_t. Several variables. Type of foam and fabric and as noted, complexity of layering to achieve desired resiliency. I would suggest you get several quotes. Montreal should have a LOT of upholsterers.

I think tour best bet is to take your cushions to a furniture or automobile reapholstery shop rather than a marine reapholsterer...you might at least get a fair price then...

Lou
We had 9 cushions redone in vinyl for topside seating & backs about 15+ yrs ago.
Covering was $1,000US and new foam doubled that.
Hard to compare but on the surface I'd say your est would be a good price???

RTF, yup! We had new foam cut for the cushions on our last boat. We didn't investigate the differences. The shop used low quality, cheap foam. Within a year the foam was breaking down and was in worst shape than the original. Not all foam is created equal as found out.

Ok finally I went with one upholsterer yesterday. The guy has been upholstery during 20 years and is in business doing various work from car, to old furniture etc...
Price will be 1675$CA all included (fabric, foam and labor), not really cheap but fabric and foam will be of good quality and this guys looks to do very good work.
I went for some denim beige fabric as I wanted some contrast with the color of mahogany. Will post some pics when they are done.
Thanks everybody.

That was quick. Your quick decision certainly removed our ability to beat this subject to death.
I was kinda looking forward to the 120 responses.

Hi Lou, The price sounds reasonable. I had a few done by an auto upholsterer a couple years back and they are more reasonable. The one caution I would have is the kind of thread they normally use for auto may not stand up in a marine environment, especially if any of the cushions are outside. You may want to clarify with him/her. Gore-Tex Tenara thread is guaranteed for life and unaffected by UV. Just a thought.

Thank you for the advice Mr RTF, indeed the selected fabric is not defacto protected, I will look at adding scotchguard protection to them.

Yeah I needed to get a quick decision as I aim to get these replaced before departing for my first cruise May 19th so not much time left. Even worse I am not sure to get them for May 18th, the guy told me that he will do his possible but cannot guarantee it so I prefer not to dream too much

Thank you for this info LaBomba. In the present case these cushion are intended for indoor only but I will check with him. Afterward I have some more to do for outdoor too.
The guy put a warranty on his work and told us that if there is any issue with any thread or zipper or anything he will fix it at no charge.
