Truck on Barge Gets Wet

Crew of 5 escaped with only one injured when a barge transporting a truck loaded with sewage capsized off Great Mackerel Beach located on the western side of Pittwater, 20 miles N of Sydney.

A body of water several miles wide, Pittwater runs off Broken Bay, it`s is a popular boating area with numerous marinas and expensive waterfront homes. Mackerel has only water access and lacks sewerage. A truck routinely loads up with sewage and transports it to the other side, on a powered vehicular barge. This time, something went wrong.

In 2007, we were on cruise ship Norwegian Dream leaving Montevideo when she collided with a barge, sinking several SUVs and containers. Later in the Southern Atlantic, the boat had a couple of power outages. The boat had a history of collisions and equipment failures. We nicknamed the ship Norwegian Nightmare.

The 2007 damage to the ship was significantly less than that occurred in 1999.
