All depends on the crew of the boat.* I've crewed on just a few racing sailboat but never experienced what you describe.* It was a hell of a lot of fun for everyone on the crews I was on.* There were boats around us with screamers on them, no question, but based on my experience I sure wouldn't say this is the norm.
Racing on a sailboat is a team sport.* There are quarter backs that yell at their team mates and ones that do not.* Some of the yelling is used to intimidate the other boats at the line or mark.* Some folks are John McEnroe on the water.*

The America's Cup boat crews have been miked as of late and there is no such nonsense.

It doesn't have to be that way.
