It's probably a company rule. Where I worked we had to wear gloves to push a cart. And if you had any kind of tool in hand, it was gloves AND safety glasses.
I know I should wear gloves more often, but that's not always practical. Sometimes skinned knuckles are just the price you pay to get the job done.
