reading between the lines it sounds like it was late in the afternoon when the storm hit. I Have a 20 Kt boat and even though it would take a little over an hour to reach the mainland from Catalina the thought of all the tings that could go wrong along the way would make me think really hard about making a run for it before the storm hit. How much warning would I need?? I just don't know. Going ashore was the best decision IMO.

Taras, you can find another boat. Maybe with a satellite dish?
What's really important is that your crew is safe and you're still here and able to spend the time to look for Taras II.
Very sad that others were not so lucky, losing their lives trying to help. My condolences to their families.

Condolences on your loss and for the loss of the mariners. I've been to Avalon many times and have always been impressed with the harbor patrol staff, a big loss.

Sad to hear of the two deaths including that of a former Kiwi boater.
10' seas in a mooring field can be disastrous as was shown here.

We sat through a lesser blow in a December back when we were based in Santa Barbara. The Harbor Patrol moved us into the North corner of the harbor and we wstched the waves roll in. Avalon is one of the coolest places to visit by boat..but one does have to keep a eye on the weather.
Taras owner made the prudent decision to get off when the did, that was a great choice.

Some years ago the Harbor Patrol sent a couple of my friends from moorings in Avalon Harbor around to the back side to anchor off the Palisades in similar conditions. Sounds like there was more warning that time than in this situation.

So sorry to see this! Glad you and crew are safe. If you can share how the boat was freed from the moorings it'd be a good learning note for me, and perhaps others.
