I've seen something similar proposed on commercial and military ships. They usually tout it as a fuel saving device.

I've often wondered whether a something smaller than this, essentially a big kite, if made fast to the stern with the right scope, could reduce your swing at anchor. Something like a sky anchor. Provided the wind direction is relatively steady, that is.
 
Yeah I've seen those. They offer one for pleasure boats for like $5000.

I like the $250 parachute better. ?
 
From experience with spinnakers on sailboats, you need good strong attachment points.
