So you hoisted the proper day signal to alert all that in fact you were powering?

Didn't think about that. Does anyone actually do that when motorsailing?

Yes, and a very few actually use anchor balls.

Greetings,
Mr. FF. What IS the proper day signal for a sailboat under power and is it necessary if motor sailing or is that the same thing?

Inverted cone for vessel with sails up and under power so it is considered a regular power vessel and not a sailing vessel under the rules.

Nope. Not once.

Of course, here in the Puget Sound, even the power boaters are smart enough to figure when a sailboat is under engine power as well as sail.

Being a recovering New Yorker I guess my fears of Liars for Hire is more toned than most.

We have the cone , and big anchor ball , and have used them 'forever".

I was considering to buy comfortable 36 sailboat. Take the "lighting stick" of and all the rigging - turn into slow trawler, but with good fuel economy. Most 36 and over, have 4cyl engines that last forever. Look for sailboat with full size keel - they have shallow draft. At most 3.5 feet If I will have to get a boat again, I will get Watkins 36- they strong build and comfortable. I had 27 and live on it like a king.
