Looks like it's magnetic. Two things come to mind for the boat. First, I'm not sure I'd want to introduce a magnet anywhere near where the compass is, and second, I don't have any metal on the helm it could stick to. On either helm for that matter.

I think it's a suction cup that releases with the upward pull of the top portion of the bottle. It'll stick to smooth surfaces only, I believe.

No magnets, sort of like a suction cup, but different. You have to be pulling straight up for it to release. It works!
