Some of the provinces have combined PST (Provincial sales tax) and GST (Goods and services tax) and call it HST (Harmonized sales tax). In Alberta for example almost all purchases are subject to GST (5%). There's an overly complicated structure which seems intent on keeping everyone confused about when GST should be charged or paid. British Columbia created the HST telling everyone how much money they would be saving but when it became clear it was costing more for the average family to live, they voted it out.
