Replaced two undersized anchors (a Bruce and a CQR) with a Vulcan 55 as a primary anchor and a Rocna 70 as my “Holy crap a hurricane is coming” storm anchor.

Still need to jigger the pins and plates around to fit bit I’m pleased with the results. Big shout out to ArtC who lead the way on this combo for our KK and to Tozz for helping get these puppies onboard.

I'd like to be able to have two anchors mounted....

But in your case, if you think the Rocna is better, why would you use the Vulcan except as spare or lost the Rocna?

What happens when you release the Rocna? Looks like it will hit the Vulcan. Might damage the galvanizing.

I’d say your choice of anchors was a great improvement over your last ones.

Of course the new ones are too small, you could have picked better anchors and you don’t have enough chain. I hope that chain is grade 70 or it’s too small.

I am so jealous! Really wanted the 40 or the 55 and would have taken the 70. As it is the 33 doesn't really fit, but works. By the time I figured it would take major surgery to make a bigger one work, the boat had already been repainted.



The 33 is more than adequate, I just wanted obvious overkill.

I have the same question as Parks. It looks like the Rocna can only be deployed if the Vulcan is already. Why not the Rocna as primary? Regardless make sure you practice various forms of deployment on a nice day so you are not figuring it out for the first time under stress. Each anchor individually and both at once and both in two steps.

Personally I would have gone with two different from factors, such as a Rocna and a Fortress or perhaps a SuperMax. But to each their own on this front, that's for sure.

There is a 70 kilo Rocna there, Pac NW, for relatively cheap.

Good question. I don't think the Rocna is necessarily better, but it is larger and my intent was to have a bad-a$$ storm anchor onboard that can also be put into service in the event we lost the Vulcan. I originally planned a Rocna 55 but the 70 was on super sale and I could not resist.

The advantage of the Vulcan as primary in it's curved shank and low weight & balance which allows it to self deploy and retrieve. We have windlass controls in the PH so it's a much lower stress operation this way. The Rocna will sit on deck from it's shank and requires a push to get her over the roller. Also, for regular operations the Vulcan will also be a little easier on the windlass.

We knew there would be interference with this setup. But our intent was always to have a back up anchor for storms. I'd expect that Rocna will only be deployed 1-2% of the time. Yes, it means moving the Vulcan but that's not terribly hard as part of a storm prep.

OC, I like that setup. The offset opens up a lot of options. Ours are parallel so we're essentially only storing the big anchor next to and slightly above the primary.

It used to be you would hear boaters talk about lunch hooks, main anchor and storm anchor. Now just about everybody has a windlass and pulling even your biggest anchor is pretty easy.

I carried three anchors on Possum but in the thirty years I owned her, I always used my biggest anchor which was attached to the windlass. I might have used one of the others as a stern anchor a couple of times.

It’s good to carry extra anchors but I’d make my biggest and best anchor my primary everyday anchor.

I spent last night in a big square houseboat hanging on a Danforth with a bent shank. A front came through and we has 15 to 20 knot winds for a while. I was surprised the damn thing held. Gotta do it again tonight.
