Port Harvey Marina

On November 25 the barge supporting the main building - office, store, and the upstairs Red Shoe Restaurant - failed and most of the building sank. The 73 year old barge was uninsurable. Everyone is fine, and George & Gail have indicated that they will rebuild. A real setback, as they have worked hard for a decade to build up the business in a challenging environment. We wish them luck.

The Port Harvey Marina is a great stopover when arriving at or departing from the Broughtons from the south.

Sorry to hear that. We have enjoyed our stays there. Nice protection from Johnstone when it is blowing.

Bummer. Glad to hear the owners are planning to rebuild. One of the things we enjoy about boating the lower BC coast is supporting the small local harbors. Places like Genoa Bay, Maple Bay, Telegraph Harbor, Silva Bay, Refuge Cove, and so on.

We have not taken our cruising boat north of Desolation yet although we take our fishing boat up to Blackfish Sound/Queen Charlotte Strait/Knight Inlet every spring for a couple of weeks and we have flown the area extensively since the mid-1980s in the floatplane. So it's good to hear of a local establishment that is surviving, and we hope that boaters (including us someday) will make the effort to support them.

Ow,Ow,Ow.
Darn, that is a really serious shame, they worked hard to get it all going.
I hope they can rebuild.

Wow! So sad! We've stayed there several times. Some very fine pizza and cinnamon buns.

George told me the oven, fryer, some small appliances, tables, chairs, etc. were saved. All the refrigerators and freezers were destroyed. All the stock in the store was destroyed and George's tools were destroyed.

There were no generators or fuel on the barge, so that's good. George and Gail's home is on shore so it was unaffected.

They're planning on having the Red Shoe Restaurant open next summer.

This is a really tough break for George and Gail, but they have the right attitude and are committed to rebuilding.

Someone needs to tell them about Kickstarter. If it was as nice a place as I read here, they should have no problem getting something going......

"73 year old barge was uninsurable"

Not that anyone should be surprised, lets hope the "New" barge gets similar lifespan.

Just got an email Waggoner blast and it was the lead story:
"The docks were not significantly damaged and Port Harvey will be operating in 2016. George and Gail are committed to reopening the restaurant and store as quickly as possible."

Port Harvey Marina

Currently at Port Harvey and they have a hospitality tent set up at the business end of the dock. Pizza and cinnamon buns are once again available. Still a "go to" place in the area, and if you are close by, drop on in and show your support.

Truly nice people.
Only stopped there twice and so its not like I was a regular, and yet both times was treated like a friend.
