Wouldn't you know it ! On the date of loading the boat (40' LOA 13'11" beam Helmsman) on the truck and shipping (over land) to the PNW from Michigan a friggin epic storm is on top of my truckers route UGG! Going to be a very interesting Day/week.

Who of you out there tipped your truck driver and what percentage did you tip on delivery.

Best of luck on that on. Looks like a fairly high risk over the next few days. Hi winds, freezing rain, snow.... What could possible go wrong?

Greetings,
Mr. No. Just lends credence to boating in ANY form depends on the weather. When in doubt, don't go out.

i havent tipped for any overland hauls because either the haul was done by an owner/operator or something went wrong (i.e. nice gash that needed to be prepared or they tried charging me for a higher loaded height when i measured myself and found them to be bluffing). that said, for someone that is not an owner operator and delivers my boat unscathed within time and budget (extenuating circumstances aside), i would consider a tip but not a percentage just a nominal amount depending on distance maybe $50-200.

If your boat sustains damage incurred during the haul, the trucker's insurance may pick up the cost of repairs.
Don't ask me how I know that. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

yup, i always make sure to get copies on all the insurance BEFORE haul. that includes all types of insurance (there are three types usually applicable). i make sure its in the drivers name (or driver is verified as a driver on the policy) and dont hesitate to call a carrier to verify the insurance is active. i had one situation where someone gave me a policy that was expiring the day of haul and it was a multi-day haul and i told them i needed to see a renewed policy. in my case, i have been lucky damage has been minor, i.e. a few hundred bucks, and could be fixed on the spot in the matter of a few hours by a mobile fiberglass repair outfit.

Mine was shipped by owner / operator and son does the escort.
I didnt tip them but have provided raving positive reviews and references ... probably worth more in the long run.

Do you mind sharing with us the cost of the trucking?
The Admiral has decreed that she want's to do the loop and I am interested in the cost to move the boat.
Thanks

Hollywood, a member of our Yacht Club bought a 44’ Selene in Baltimore and will be taking it to Miami later this month. From there it goes on one of those yacht moving ships and will be delivered in Vancouver BC two or three weeks after leaving Miami. If I see them at the club Friday, I’ll ask.

Yes you are correct...And that's why I went with a very reputable company to ship the boat. (I'll share the name after it's all said and done).

The price we paid likely won't help you to know unless your going to the same place We are coming from and even then everything is situational I will share this though , You will pay more than all those guys I talked to who shipped their boats of many different types and kinds and sizes 2, 4, 5, or ten years ago. That being said. I wouldn't count on what another boater tells you they paid. One should call around to get fair market price and even then, it might be OK to pay little more to have a company/person who has experience shipping your Model of boat. There are a lot of wannabes out there who will tell you anything to get their hands on your money. Experience cost money. With all that said I hope our boat makes it without blocking damage, strapping damage, rock damage, tree damage or going over cliff lol. make sure you have insurance that can cover you ontop of your truckers policy.

If the boat was delivered on time and in good shape a sizable tip and recommendation would have been nice.

Owner operators set their own rates and pay themselves. It is pretty much standard across any industry not to tip an owner operator but if they have employees helping that is different. I think we live in a society where tipping has become expected in too many scenarios. There are other gestures which are as good or even better than tipping. I think glowing recommendations/referrals is a major "tip" and probably better than cash!

I'm not new to the shipping business, shipped a 80' from FLA to Ensenada just last year. Just trying to get an Idea, great lakes to PNW costs for a roughly 40' boat

I think I'd want my boat OFF the roads rather than having it trucked tru a blizzard or sandstorm.
I've seen factory machines ruined from bad weather even though precautions were taken.

Suggest you contact these people. Mom and pop business out of Menominee, Michigan (the Upper Peninsula). Highly regarded in those parts...no BS. You probably need to decide where you want to launch the boat though. I'd choose Lake Michigan over Superior as a delivery point simply because there are more options regarding service facilities if you need them when you ultimately splash the boat. You also need to think about when you want to move the boat...upper Green Bay currently has lots of ice....Superior has to be worse. PM me if you need info regarding the upper reaches of Green Bay and Lake Michigan. Can't help with Superior.

Boat arrived with no problems or issues. The trucker from Associated Boat Transport was good to work with at load and off load. Associated Boat Transport knew what they were doing and how to deal with the unforeseen. If One needs to truck a boat from the east coast to the PNW We are please with the services We received. If you want to save money anything you can do to reduce the length and height will be your friend. Another smart move We made was to bubble wrap the loose items so as not to scratch the walls and floors (Holly & Teak) during transport. Big thank you to Scott at Helmsman Trawlers & Waterline Boats for the recommendation on the trucker. Roger if your out there listening thank you for flying out there to St Joseph MI to supervise the loading.Scott @ Helmsman Trawlers & Waterline Boats gave us the red carpet service on this purchase. Happy wife happy life, Thank you
