So, despite receiving 4 times the number of votes of the second place name, looks like Boaty McBoatface will not be the name of Britain's new research vessel.
Asking people for their opinion is a very dangerous thing to do, and that's why politicians never honour their popularist manifestos once they've got into power; they'll say absolutely anything to get elected.

God only knows what the result of referendum on the UK staying in the EU will be; one wonders if the general public is actually qualified to make this tricky judgement.

Greetings,
Not surprising given the desire for the Scottish to separate. I suspect McBoatface is of Scottish origin.

Yes, from a red and green vessel stranded at the north pole.

Maybe so but don't ask for a public naming by popularity! They got what they asked for, stiff upper lip and all...

This story is a great demonstration of how government tends to work from the home owner association up. We want your input unless we don't like it.

Apparently not to the ones who voted for that name.

I agree. It's only a boat name and in a case like that for a totally tax payer funded research vessel, it would be great PR.

But that's bureaucrats for you, tripping over dollars to pick up nickels.

"If voting really made a difference, it would be illegal." No, Mark Twain didn't say it, but I wish he did.

Still looks like a McBoatface to me if ever there was one.

Hi Richard , I totally agree with you, the bow section is far to big and isn't in proportion with the rest of the hull. But when you spend 200m on a research vessel it has to have a dignified name; David Attenbough is one of my heroes , so I think its a fitting result.
