Hard time finding a replacement cap for water deck fill

Hi All,

I'm hoping for some advice on where to track down a specifically sized replacement cap for a freshwater deck fill. In a ill conceived attempt at filling my freshwater tank late at night and after a few beers, I managed to lose my cap into the harbor below. I tried buying a replacement from West Marine, which looked like it would fit, but the threads turned out to be just a hair too big and it wouldn't screw on.

I'm not sure if I have a hard-to-find size, but I haven't been able to find a replacement anywhere online. Based on my rough measurements, it looks like the threads are 1 3/4" inches across, (the replacement from Westmarine was 1 7/8"). I've taken some pictures of a second deck fill that I have for another freshwater tank, which I'm hoping is the same size as the first. Any input would be most appreciated.

Does your gas cap or waste cap match in size? Do you have a caliper you can measure another cap with? It's hard to tell the measurement from the pics above.

I had to replace my fuel caps on my 1977 Californian and found a match here.

My caps are 1 1/2 inch diameter thread. Yours looks very similar and could be SeaDog brand also.

I bought the cap after mine went swimming. The tank burped and stainless does not float well. So I thought (there I go again!) stainless is stainless and this would work. The lid said WASTE but I could fix that.

And I did. A couple of gasket gizmos and a little ring on the outside so I could tie it to the rail later, I attempted to put it on my fill. Well, mine's a Perko and the doggone thing won't fit.

Anyway, here's pictures:

The black o-ring is starting to crack. You'll want to replace that.

Obviously not fancy and one can well understand the reluctance to replace a WATER top with one that's not spiffy. Your call.

And I'm keeping my braided line in case I ever get another cap. Right now I'm using a plastic toe-stubber, but it was $2.50 at West so it's about perfect.

I had a similar problem with a waste cap looked for months no luck. wound up buying the whole assembly, tube and cap replaced both, about 20 bucks more than the cap alone at West Marine.

Standard 1 1/2" pipe thread. Steel pipe goes by I.D. it certainly appears as though the Internal Diameter is 1.5 inches.

If you have access under the deck, it should be an easy change out. Just replace the whole thing. I have had to reseal mine, and there is enough slack that I can pull it out and remove the hose from the deck. Have you tried that yet?

Move your tape measure down until the upper edge of the tape is on the center line of the plug, then measure the inside diameter. Your bottom picture above but move end of tape to inside of plug threads and line up top edge on center line. Should show 1.5". Standard pipe thread.

The original poster indicated a different one. His has a slot down the center -- like mine does. The one linked is not what he has, though I wonder how he has a picture of the missing gizmo. Me? I've got no photo of the one that went swimming.

They are similar -- almost the same, but the threads are definitely different. And mine measures 1.75" at the threads. It fits in the Perko water thing, but won't spin on.

Check with a company called TANKLOCK at tanklock.com. They make caps to fit several different opening sizes and have them listed on their website. They ain't cheap but when you need one they have 'em.

Most of theirs are locking but I'd bet you could get them to make one that didn't lock.

Everybody and his brother made deck fittings , so a lacl of comonality is the norm.

AS it probably gas been installed over 5 years the fitting will require PM rebedding any way , so just purchase a replacement , and a couple of extra caps too.

I had the same problem. After buying and failing with perko, seadog and brand x, I found that it is Attwood that has the different threads.

A little thread drift, but I'm tired of pinching my hand with adjustable wire deck cap tool. Any suggestions on a quality tool would be appreciated.

If memory serves me correctly, Flywright had a "self venting" cap that he replaced.
