GPS testing in the Puget Sound area

NM: 15/17
WASHINGTON – PUGET SOUND – ADMIRALTY INLET TO OLYMPIA – Proposed GPS testing
Strategic Command is proposing to conduct GPS testing encompassing the state of Washington, from Whidbey Island to Longview, WA including Puget Sound. The GPS navigation signal may be unreliable due to testing on GPS frequencies used by shipboard navigation and handheld systems. Systems that rely on GPS, such as e-911, AIS and DSC, may be affected. The test center point is at US Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor Trident Base, in position 47-43-56.280N 122-43-54.120W, with a possible impact radius of 33 NM to the east, 35 NM to the north, 25 NM to the west and 95 NM to the south of the test position. Enclosure (4) of this Local Notice to Mariner shows a rudimentary map of the area that will be affected. The test frequency will be GPS L1. The dates and times of the proposed test are:

WASHINGTON – PUGET SOUND – SEATTLE TO OLYMPIA – Proposed GPS testing

US Strategic Command is proposing to conduct GPS testing encompassing the southern Puget Sound region, from Port Orchard south to Olympia and all connecting waterways, including the southern portion of Hood Canal.

The GPS navigation signal may be unreliable due to testing on GPS frequencies used by shipboard navigation and handheld systems. Systems that rely on GPS, such as e-911, AIS and DSC, may be affected. The test radius is 33 NM from McChord Air Force Base in position 46-58-47.640N 122-40-22.080W. The date and time of the proposed test is:
03 Aug 17: from 1000 to 1600 Local Daylight Savings Time (1700 to 2300 GMT) Frequencies: GPS L1/L2

More information is available at the U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Center web site, https://www.navcen.uscg.gov (link is external). During this period GPS users are encouraged to report any GPS service outages that they may experience to the Navigation Information Service by calling (703) 313-5900 or by using the Navigation Center’s web site to submit a GPS problem report.

Thanks for the heads up Mike. Sounds like we are back to hand steering and old school navigation during weekdays for 4 weeks.
