Gloucester ideas

I need to stop this afternoon in NE Mass, as I need to get a water pump tommorrow morning.

Any suggestions?
Where to shop?
Where to stop?
Where to slop?

Want to keep cost down, so a mooring is OK. launch service would be appreciated though as otherwise will have to get dingy down on my own.

Original plan was Marblehead, but then i realized they have a race this weekend and it's likely to be expensive and crowded.

You might try Beverly Port Marina for a transient slip. Should be close to West marina plus on site supplies/maintenance. Gloucester would certainly do for a transient mooring (20 listed). Further north there is Newburyport but you need to go into the river aways to get to town where there are a couple of options for transient slips/moorings.

Newburyport

Public docks at Newburyport are pretty reasonable. I thought we stayed a couple nights with out 34 foot trawler for about 85 dollars. There are several marinas in town.

Transient vessel tie up at the City docks is available on a first come first serve basis from Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day weekend. Fees are collected by a dockmaster on site. Fees range from $2.00 per hour to $6.00 per hour according to the size of your vessel. Water and electricity is available and and is included in the hourly fee. We also have four guest moorings available for $25.00 per night. Vessels coming into Newburyport harbor should contact the Newburyport dockmaster via Channel 12 for dockage availability or assistanc.

You can anchor in the inner harbor at Gloucester or take a mooring that will be much cheaper than Marblehead. But I think that the closest WM is in Marblehead.

Rose's Marine in Gloucester might have what you need.

David,

Thanks. I am going to Rose's tommorrow.
picked up a mooring from harbormaster. $25 and water taxi is on $3 each way.
Very pleased with myself for avoiding the $$$Sailing yacht crowd in Marblehead. I did see hundreds of sailboats though.

Gloucester is a nice working town. i like it a lot.

Thanks all for your ideas.

Welcome. Rose's is the place to go. If they don't have what you need they can usually get it over night.

Where are you moored? Inner harbor? I've got a pretty clear view of the outer harbor and don't see a Krogen?

I am leaving Groton, CT headed to Rockport, MA 25 July. Should be there 27 or 28 depending on how many stops I make. Wife will join me in Rockport where my sister and Brother-in-law live.

Twisted, if it works out it would be great to meet up with a fellow TF member. We plan to go up to Portsmouth then work back down to Boston. Red Sox tickets for 2 August!

Anyone have suggestions on where to stay in Boston? How about diesel on the North Shore? We are at about $4.00/gal at our club.

Hope to meet some of you this summer.

I was just down your way in Mystic a couple of weeks ago for a Nordhavn rendezvous. Give a should when you are up this way.

As for fuel, here in Gloucester, Cape Ann Marine has excellent prices. Rose Marine as well. Not sure which is better right now. Just be sure to ask whether sales tax is included in any price you are quoted.

In Boston I've heard that the Constitution Marina is good. I've stayed at Rowe's Wharf and Boston Yacht Haven before. Both are nice, but very expensive, and the boat wake is brutal, especially at Rowe's. At Boston Yacht Haven I think it would be OK if you are bow to the channel. Just don't be beam to.

When in Gloucester, Causeway Diner is our favorite. Always crowded, but, well, go there once and you'll see why we keep coming back.

We've stayed at Constitution Marina in Boston. It was quite a while ago, but we liked it.

I'm between the pretty lime green sail boat and the trailer on pontoons

I love it here. I will have to write a review for active captain. So quiet all night and I like being around people who actually work.

Are there any used marine parts stores? Not for my pump, but I love browsing.

My neice asked for a picture of our boat.
I sent her Blue Moon above.
She wrote back " I'm glad you finally got it! It looks great! Are you going to keep that name?"
What a sweetheart.

Must be the inner harbor which is inside Ten Pound Island.

I'm not aware of any used marine parts stores, but let me know if you come across one.

I just stayed at Constitution Marina in Boston for two nights. Staff good, they quoted me $3.50/ft but said there was a 15% BoatUS discount. and then gave it to me grudgingly.

The real issue which marred the stay was that I let them put me in a slip that was simply too difficult to get in and out of. Coming in, we almost had a real disaster as there was a current running and I stupidly continued into a situation where I could not maneuver. Passing by a slip that was reserved for another boat, but that I could have gotten into with no drama. Me, trying to do the right thing almost cost me.

I learned a valuable lesson. Either go to a slip that is readily accessible or go to another marina.

Closest used marine parts store is in Salem on Bridge st.At least it used to be. I second Roses machine shop for parts. They stock all kinds of marine propulsion parts. kind of pricey, but David Rose is a wealth of knowledge.

Closing the Gloucester page, it was the best stop I've made in last three months.
People do friendly. Absolutely no swell on mooring. I've been in slips that were more rocking.
Rose Marine had commercial grade parts that are half the price of wm.

Just wonderful. Will go back.

We stayed on a mooring in Gloucester when we brought our boat home from New Hampshire to Lake Ontario. Really enjoyed our visit there!

Glad you enjoyed your visit. I think it's an often overlooked port. So far Rose's is my favorite marine supply shop anywhere. Don't go there looking for a grill, water toys, or drink glasses with anchors on them. But if you need something to make your boat float or move, it's the place to go. Prices are always better than West Marine, and almost always competitive with the lowest out there for quality product. And they know their stuff, unlike the kids at West Marine. Need a hydraulic hose? No Problem. Need something fabricated from stainless? No problem.

As for moorings, I would recommend a mooring in the inner harbor if you can get it. The outer harbor (where my boat is) is fine 80% of the time, but on busy holiday weekends the boat wake can make it an uncomfortable spot when you are taking it broadside. Tucking into Niles Beach and dropping a hook is the best alternative.

No connection to any of the businesses in town, just a resident who wants to see the town flourish as a cruising destination.

Thanks, yes, I was on the inner harbor mooring. So very peaceful, virtually no boat movement at all and then only a few small lobster boat wakes in the morning.

I will certainly return. I was there two nights and was invited out twice. Never happened once all the way from FL. "It's not an opinion; it's a fact"

My first "licensed" Capt job was running the whale watching boats out of Roses in the early 80's. Andrea Gail, of Perfect Storm fame was tied up there as well.
