Getting ready to cross a bar?

Here's a video I found that has some good tips about crossing bars. It's from Australia and New Zealand but their bars seem to be pretty much like ours....deadly if you don't know what you're doing.

A great video, although it doesn't address coming in with a displacement cruiser like many of us have. In most cases, we cannot keep up with the speed of the waves, as was advised in the video. The adds an big extra degree of difficulty.

Its worth building up your skill level in following seas of a comfortable level before attempting any serious bar crossing. Know how your boat handles when a wave is overtaking you. Every boat is different so I won't give any advice other than if in doubt, don't do it.
