I remember the USCG VHF calls when we were cruising down the Waccamaw in January.

Glad I was in Ft Pierce, Fl and not the Atlantic.

From what I was reading elsewhere, there are many issues with the early reports. Hopefully a detailed one will come out explaining a lot.

Hope I don't have to wait for the book....

Wifey B: Do Tuff be synonym 4 stupid?

As Judge Judy says, "If it doesn't make sense, it's usually not true." Now I've no doubt he was rescued, just how he got there and what took place. Clearly he wasn't flipped and desperate the entire time. Had he just been floating in the gulf stream all that time he'd have been hundreds and hundreds of miles further north.

Maybe he was going to head to Bermuda and got stuck along the way. Maybe the Bahamas but he didn't know the gulf stream flows North.

And I doubt seriously we ever hear the Paul Harvey "Rest of the Story."

There's a bunch of blabber about this over on CruisersForum. Apparently he just went fishing one day and didn't come back. Posts that he made over there suggest he knew nearly zero about boating, and nearly zero about boats. It sounds like a Mr Magoo episode.

That's the one thing that is certain. He had no experience, had never been offshore, only puttering around in the ICW a little bit. Beyond that, no one knows what his real plan was or what happened.

I'm thinking he went out in the boat one day for a short sail. His girlfriend picked him up or met him at the pre-arranged time and location and they spent a wonderful couple of months together and now it's time to go back home to mama.

It's pretty obvious from his condition that he didn't spend that whole time drifting at sea.

Can't blame the guy but why make it so public?

The video of his interview is now available....omg.

Man collected rainwater to survive 66 days at sea

A small selection of threads he started to give an idea:

-How far out to sea is safe in a hurricane?
-Remove sails for tropical storm?
-Chainplate's isn't mounted right. Is it still ok to sail?
-Bilge pump emptying into the cockpit
-30 amp ext cord to 50 amp outlet jerry-rig
-Help! Too cold, condensation, sick, need info
-Are Liveaboards Unwanted? Disliked? All over Everywhere?

Quite honestly he sounded more like someone pranking the site than real. He stopped posting on November 22.

And the classic post which may tell you all you need to know...."I was rewiring my boat after smoking a little herb and now whenever I run my bilge pump, the bilge water empties into the cockpit"

Something is just basically wrong with this whole event. I saw the video of the guy and he was in just too good a shape to have gone through what he said he did.

I am a skeptic in all things until the truth comes out. Do you all remember the Aussie lad who got lost in the Himalayas and survived a long time in a snow cave and lived on chocolate bars.

Well I for one did not buy that story at all.

I feel for those who are lost at sea through misadventure even though they were well prepared, the world is a dangerous place and we ust overprepare when we venture out. But I have no sympathy for fools who do stupid stuff and put the lives of volunteer coast guards here in Oz or the professional over there in danger because of their lack of common sense.

Be Safe your family needs you all.

David.

In this day and age, stupid wins hands down. Can't wait for the internet donations to start pouring in to buy the poor guy another boat.

Slightly off topic, but a couple we know went cruising a little over a year ago. Anchored in totally stupid places, got lost on the ICW and ended up in the Atlantic off Cape Hatteras at night. They just got a newer and bigger boat after getting hit in an anchorage in the Bahamas.

I'm telling you, stupid pays.

Did he say he went out to the Gulfstream to fish, CASTNETTING, off of a sailboat. I guess it is possible but ... I don't know how to describe it.

Wow!! Interesting interview. What to think. . . what to think?? What comes to mind right now:

1. He really didn't and doesn't know much about boating and that was a recipe for disaster!

2. Note to self. . . scuppers may not work when they're held "below" the water line!!

3. Clearing the rigging was the right choice, but even a broken clock is right twice a day

4. As Churchill said “The greatest lesson in life is to know that even fools are right sometimes.”

5. Smoking pot really does have long term effects on mental acuity

6. Forest Gump's mother was correct!! (Stupid is as Stupid does!)

7. The difference between living and dying isn't always training and skill. Sometimes it's just the result of an over abundance of dumb luck.

The guy lost in the snow cave was genuine, he survived on some chocolate bars, but suffered some permanent eye damage. This one however does sound 'fishy' and I use the term advisedly, because I have a hard enough job catching fish with the right gear, let alone by hand, which is what he claims to have lived on.

He said he lost his water containers overboard, (surely a yacht that size would have a decent sized water tank built in, and not loose enough to go overboard), and lived on rainwater and raw fish caught by hand. I too have my doubts on this one - he was in too good a shape and walked too straight and well for someone cooped up for two months on board, starved or not. Willing to be proved wrong, but...
