Genset size

Is there a way to determine the size (kW ???) of your genset? My surveyor and the previous surveyor says my gen is 8 kW Onan. However, the previous information relating to the gen that I found on the boat, says it is 6 kw. All old paperwork list it as 6 kw. There are no tags or labels on the gen.

Since you said it is an Onan but not the model number I can't tell you. But that's as simple as running the model number on the internet. There is also a metal tag riveted to the generator which gives all the specs.

For instance mine is an "Onan MDJE 3cr", and if you search that on the web, up pops the service manual for Onan's MDJA - MDJF and inside is the spec ratings for each. MDJE 3cr is a 7.5 KW generator.

In that era it is likely either a 8.0 MDKD or 4.0 MDKC. Both are Kubota 3cyl engines, but have different displacements. The MDKD is a Kubota D950, number stamped on flange where injection pump seats. The MDKC, not sure which Kubota it is, it will be a DXXX but not a D950.
