Hey gang. My son is buying a boat. After searching for several months, we are under contract on a Gulfstar 36 MkII. We're sold on the old Gulfstars and feel they offer a lot of bang for the buck. We were looking for no-frills lower and maintenance. No teak decks and very little brightwork are pluses. We like the full displacement full keel and general layout.
The boat in particular was built in 1975, has Perkins 4.154 mains, and a northern lights 8kw genny. We will be surveying and sea trialing the boat next week. I have used the search function quite a bit. There is info here and there about the GS36, but no specific "Achilles heel" info.
What are some problems with this build to look out for? The hull is solid, but prone to blistering. The deck and house are (balsa or marine ply?) cored and prone to rot. But that is typical of just about any boat. The electrical wiring is a birds nest and will need to be tidied up/rewired. Anything else specific to look out for?
Thanks!
