Pearl, with her flotation harness on, for plucking her out of the water if she jumps overboard. Little lab mix, shelter rescue. She can swim, but can't climb back into the dingy or up the swim ladder.20160911_223520.jpeg

Pike and Remy underway. Bird Dogs on a boat, what could possibly go wrong?

Molly began her cruising life in 08, she's never known any home other than the boat except for some stints at the dirt home while we still owned it. She was never quite comfortable there. Home is on the boat. From a wee pup, she's always loved ice. During our recent 5 weeks on the hard in JAX during June, she enjoyed the evening walks that would end up at the ice machine for a cool-off. Ice is king, unless, of course there's a kid around!

He's still pretty new to the boating thing, but here's our Standard Poodle named Xander passed out by my feet last weekend.

Sorry about your loss. It is very difficult to deal with. They are furry children and we love ours. Radar loves going on the boat. He especially liked going through the Trent Severn Waterway because the lock masters would give him a treat when we locked through. After the third lock as we approached a lock he would start to drool and cry softly. The photos show us in the dinette and Radar on watch on the flybridge.

My heart goes out to you. Same age as our dog - I dread the day.

So sorry for your loss.

Sincere condolences to the crew of Waffa.

The Admiral while embarked...standing watch and off duty. Likes to bark orders. Note the anti-bark collar, which works great...used rarely and only on the vibrate or buzz mode...he knows the drill. No mere boat dog, "The Dude" is recognized as the marina dog. The James Cagney type...huge persona in a small package.

Love all the dog pictures. Anyone have ideas how to board an 80 lb Chocolate Lab onto grand banks. My lab Libby will not walk a ramp and is to heavy for me to lift her on and off the boat from dock. THinking of using some sort of ropes and pulley and some kind of sling for the dog to lift and swing her onto the boat . Would love to have some idea others have tried that worked. THanks

Dave,

Welcome aboard. I put a reply on your new thread about getting our dog onboard.

Here is our favorite crew member. Pixie our 6 year old Shih Tzu!:smitten:

No ferrying Merlin ashore to go potty anymore.

Today he has two choices...
He can swim ashore and come back on his own to go potty - which he prefers if we're within about a quarter mile of the beach

Or he can go on the green mat.

Anyone want to buy a SportYak and trolling motor?

How did you train Merlin to go on the mat?

We have just been informed our application to adopt a rescue has been accepted and we will pick him up in a couple of weeks. Bo is has had a rough couple of years but we are confident he will be a great boat dog. Wife has already bought life vest and other toys. Picture once he comes aboard.

This is Captain.

He's good for anything that floats; jet ski, dinghy, kayak, tube, etc.

where do the dogs go to the bathroom when on the water and do they want to jump overboard? I may need flotation devices for them?

We like this jacket for our 85# Lab. It has 2 handles so it is easy to pick him up and carry him. Outward Hound Granby Splash Dog Life Jacket. Got it where else? Amazon.

Just another kid, wears it to/from the parking lot to the boat. He has not shown any signs of jumping in, but has stumbled a few times. Underway, not so much, either in sight or on a leash to a line laid on the deck.

We bought a contrasting color life preserver with a handle. I once saw a black lab swimming in sea water. He seemed to enjoy it, but you could hardly see the dog in the water. So when we bought ours, we bought yellow. Be sure it has a handle so you can tie a line to it, or use a boat hook to get him close if the need arises. Also, allows for you to attach a light beacon that goes off when wet. Once we start cruising long range, the wife will require that I will get a auto-PLB for the dog. Much cheaper than a divorce:)!!
