Many dock master have never seen their marina from the water. They know the layout well but aren't good at telling you how to get there. "enter the harbor and turn left to dock C sounds clear when looking at a dock map but when you get in and cant find the dock numbers or labels it gets interesting.

We always stand off to judge conditions and also to ask the dockmaster how we will be tying in order to get the lines ready so it is not a surprise to the deck hand.

Good point. My son has been working at our local harbour as an assistant wharfinger. He would know the entry into our slip quite well, but I think I'll run him into our transient harbour so he can see what it is like from a boat.

Dock hand, I'd agree with you. Dockmaster, very very rare as they are involved in maintenance, and usually boaters themselves. You can almost always tell who's who from talking with them.
