Dismal News On The Right Whale

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.

They are limping along in the north Pacific as well, at about 2% of their numbers before whalers showed up. One came as far south as Haida Gwaii a few years ago, so maybe they are extending their range.

Always thought it'd be cool to come back as a male Right Whale. The females are promiscuous scamps and will 'do it' with pretty much anyone who comes along. The males therefore have evolved the largest testicles of any animal on Earth so as to blow the other guys junk outta there. Yowzzaaaa!

Hopefully the much lower human population on the west coast will give them the room they need...

Trumps got this under control. His tarriff plan will reduce import/exports so there'll be less traffic in the shipping lanes !!!

In all seriousness though, this is bad news. Even if the population was holding steady or slightly increasing, their survivability depends on the tinyest of sea creatures. Their food supply will be the first part of the food chain to succumb to changes in salinity, temperature and pollution. Combine that with a shrinking gene pool that is bound to have a negative effect on the robustness of the species, and their fate may already have been sealed.

Teeny weeny bit more for you.

The Right Whale penis can reach over 8 feet in length and the testicles, six feet long, can weigh over 1,000 pounds.

In our area on BC’s north coast Humpback Whale numbers are climbing really fast...hopefully the Right Whales can do as well.

I think most of the whales, worldwide, are in trouble.
I was just reading about our southern Orca and they are having a tough time.
Too much noise from all kinds of vessels, not enough food as their favourite, the salmon is way down, harrasment from all kinds of vessels and so on.

Sure some whales in some areas may be doing better but overall?????

Yeah....Always wondered why at Admiral calls me “Mr.Right”.:socool:

Whale numbers are increasing here, as shown by the increasing traffic levels up and down the east coast coming from and returning to Antarctic waters, and I believe the west coast too. While up north they calve, and then make use of the previously described 'wedding tackle". There are several varieties of whale involved.
Here it is called the southern right whale. Anecdotally said to be so named as being the "right"ie correct, whale to harpoon, but when I searched, that seemed to be BS,elsewhere anyway.

...and more importantly, so does Herman Melville:

“In one respect this is the most venerable of the Leviathans, being the one first regularly hunted by man. It yields the article commonly known as whalebone or baleen; and the oil specially known as “whale oil”

Well there you go! Coming up the east coast they pass, perhaps nervously,Eden and Twofold Bay, both whaling sites in old days. Now dedicated whale watchers give them names and check off lists, they even enter Sydney Harbour on rare occasions. We`ve come a long way.
