Cracked battery case?
Hi,
on the new boat, I have several batteries (golf cart and 4D) which have had the edges of their cases crack, I presume from having frozen.
Is there any way to salvage these batteries? Can I epoxy over the cracks? Can I have a shop pull out the plates and put in a new case?
Or - are they junk?

That's exactly what I said would happen if you didn't hit the "Batt Para" button upon re-entry. Batteries will survive the rapid fall, but not the sudden stop.* I had to do it. Really!!!

If they froze, they have been ruined.* Also, you don't want to deal with leaking acid.* Battery shops can test them and tell you for sure and they will want the old battery as a "core" when they sell you a replacement.* Value is $5.00 or so.

I was afraid of that... guess it's time to go battery shopping in the Spring.

Replace them. You do not want battery acid running around. Technically the cases cold be inert gas welded but I it's not worth it, probably worth more $ than new. The freezing likely did some damage to the plated and internal connections

RE: Cracked battery case?
Some will crack if the V regulator is bad and they get really overcharged and HOT.
Usually the stench will alert the operator.
Remember Start batteries are for starting engines,,,real deep cycle "golf carts" are for the House loads.
A "multipurpose" marine battery does nothing well.

RE: Cracked battery case?
FF touched on an important issue. If your charger is not up-to-date, you may fry new batteries. How old are the present charger and batteries?
