Crack to worry about photo

When we purchased our Selene 47, I noted several areas with surface cracks caused by stress, particularly on the Portuguese bridge door and a few radiused corners on the flybridge. I had them all repaired by Northwest Fiberglass, the same crew that stripped away a decade of paint from the bottom. They did a great job and the cost was around $1200.

And numerous cracks under the timber railings
In a place with little yearly rainfall, those cracks are not an issue. Get into an area like the Pacific North West where they can have rain every day of the year, and a lot of times meters worth of rain a month, those cracks to turn into a lot of damage. Throw in a few freeze thaw cycles and those cracks become holes. What I'm getting at is it all depends on where your boat is located, and the weather, as to how big of a concern cracking can be.
 
I am not sure that pure gel cracks and rain are that big of a deal....in a place with freeze thaw cycles may see the cracks worsen butif there is no crack in the laminate and it can dry out at some point....then????

I have seen underwater gel cracks last years with no progressive damage so topside it would take more than just a gel crack to be serious.

That's why if it is anything but barely visible hailline, I prefer grinding to see what's going on.

The important part is determining gel coat or stress crack.

Structurally I wouldn't be concerned but if shelling out half a mill on a boat I expect not to see cracks.
Mind you, they could have wiped a bit of colour into them and you probably wouldn't have noticed them.
 
The photos are just a few cracks I photographed. There are many more and would take a great amount of work to repair all. We live in Queensland where we can go from drought conditions to flood conditions within days. Summer is the rainy season which can bring monsoonal amounts of rain. Ive had a look at quite a few boats now and have never seen one with anywhere as many gel cracks. A few I can cope with but when you're talking 40 -50 quite largish cracks, then I'm out of here. I'm not basing my decision just on this but there are other items on the boat that are fishy.

Mr. R. From the number of additional "largish" cracks you describe, you're wise to pass on this particular boat IMO. Trust me. Your boat is out there. You appear to be doing your due diligence inspecting potential candidates. I don't know if anyone chimed in on whether or not this is typical for Selene's. I would think not as they are always well spoken of. I wonder what the story behind all the cracks is...
 
Nice looking Defever. Wish they had engine room photos, I would like to see how much room there is, must be huge...

Oh, I knew that a Defever would have a great engine room, I just wanted to drool...
 
Ahhh, just about to make an offer on the Defever. Nervous, excited all at once.
