Visiting Alaska was much like visiting another country, itself. It was a different world that we didn't understand. You can read and talk all you want, but until you're there, you don't really grasp it all. I'm sure Hawaii is the same way. Part of it is that we live almost at the far extreme of the country. In many ways, parts of Mexico and even countries further south were more like South Florida than Alaska is. Both the climate and the geography forced people to adapt and learn to live life differently. Seeing how they do so is a great experience and we realize we still didn't touch the more remote areas of the country.
