Cape Classic 30

Does anyone know anything about the Cape Classic 30 'Down East' that was produced by Cape Nova boats during the 1990's? I found one for sale that I kind of like, but I'll be durned if I can find any info (beyond an old pamphlet) about 'em. Thanks, in advance, for any info you might have!

Better looking than a NT32 but I'd still take the NT.

We purchased Somerled (old Norse for Summer Wanderer) two years ago and are launching her on Wednesday for our third season. We have sailed a 32 foot sloop for 30 years but due to age and mobility issues we wanted to move to something different and easier to handle. In the last few years we used our boat as a summer cottage and rarely sailed her motoring most of the time. We cruise in a large bay on the Atlantic with reportedly 365 islands so there are plenty of anchorages. The Cape Classic 30 is a good boat for 2 people to spend several nights on at a time on. I have not had her out in the Atlantic in any rough weather so I am not sure how she will handle as she seems a little top heavy. We don't use the flying bridge a lot due to the weather being usually cool if the wind is off the Atlantic and my wife has had two knees replaced the last one last May so we are hoping to get her up top more. Somerled has the Cummings 210 HP six cylinder engine which seems more than adequate. We really enjoy the propane fridge and hot water off the engine both things we did not have on the sailboat. I have been told that the boats originally had rudder problems and that ours had been refit with a 1/4" SS plate rudder to make her more friendly to handle.

If you have any other questions please reply and I will attempt to answer them. We really like Somerled and can't wait to get back on the and enjoying the weekends.

The Cape Classic 30 is a solid, dependable vessel, "built like a brick outhouse" our surveyor reported. Hull #7 appears to be up for auction. Like it, we found some moisture below the engine air intakes, but that was a quick fix. There was a very positive magazine article published around 1989 on this model. It does throw a mighty wake in the mid-RPM range. I was told some owners added lead bags in the bilge to improve stability.
We enjoyed owning #4 (named 'Caper' at the time) for 10 years. Best thing we did was change fridge to propane.

Colin: FYI The boat originally was used by the builder's family before being sold, and as third owners we bought it in Freeport NS. You would be fifth (or possibly sixth). The owner prior to us had motored it to Lake Erie via New York and the Erie Canal one year and back down the St Lawrence in the next. The picture you have was taken by me not far from St Peters in the Bras d'or Lakes. I hope you enjoy her fully and as much as we have.

Thanks for the information Gordon

The original builders were Frank Flinn and Don Munroe both were from the Chester NS area where we now keep Somerled. It was interesting to hear that she had been to the great Lakes and back. we bought her from the Hackets in the spring of 2015 so that probably makes us the 5th owners.
