Buying your trawler - documentation

The Hailing Port on the back of my boat is "Ardmore, OK" The CG allowed it, and they have never questioned it.

I did have a friend from France try to put his hailing port his home town there. They did not allow that.

That whole concept is called "port of convenience". Your listed "hailing port" does not necessarily have to be the port you normally keep the boat at.

RE: Buying your trawler - documentation

Hey Keith, even though it may not be your normal port, must it actually be a port?* If it's a city without navigatble water, can it be a hailing port?

BTW, my boat's hailing boat is Belmont Bay, VA.* This isn't a city, but is an officially identified body of water.

Gil, I don't even think the place has to exist as long as it is in a state of the USA....

Absolutely not. If I can't have Tiki Bar, FL you can't have Intercourse, PA. Unless, however, it there is a place named that. It wouldn't surprise me.

Gil--

There are a number of boats in our marina--- and some of them for sure are documented--- with hailing ports in Montana. In these cases, the hailing port is where the boat owner lives or has his/her primary residence.

Might be nothing to you but interesting to someone else.* Naming boats are a big deal to most people.* The proper naming is what is being discussed here.* If you don't like the thread, just don't click on it.* Purdy darned simple if you ask me.

It used to be that your "port of record" HAD to be a place where you had a mailing address. So, if you documented your boat 16 years ago the port would often be where the owner lived which could be many miles from where the boat moored. Apparently the rules have been relaxed some since then.
